The next community gathering for Program Increment (PI) 11 is here! The first online meeting was a huge success back in April. Once again, we will be meeting virtually July 20-24, 2020! I’m excited to share a bit about what’s new for this month’s convening. First, as usual, a little about Mojaloop and the purpose of our quarterly community meetings.
What is Mojaloop?
Mojaloop is the world’s first open source platform for interoperability in a real-time payment network. We helped build it with the purpose of driving financial inclusion. As the world navigates through the COVID-19 pandemic, the importance of Digital Payment Offerings has been realized like never before. Even during the pandemic’s relatively short lifetime, there has been much progress towards real-time payments and interoperability. Additionally, this challenging time has conversely highlighted the gaps that still exist and how interoperable solutions, such as Mojaloop, can solve for the system’s shortcomings. The efforts of the community at this convening in prioritizing Roadmap topics and by contributing via other means can have a significant impact.
About Mojaloop Convenings
Mojaloop convenings have taken place once per quarter since the project began in the summer of 2016. Historically, the event has been hosted by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. This will be the first community meeting to be hosted by both the Foundation and the newly-formed Mojaloop Foundation (established in May 2020). The convenings, like Mojaloop, are inclusive of anyone who wishes to participate. However, you do need to register to attend.
July’s event will be a review of what has been newly added to the Mojaloop ecosystem during PI-10 and what to look forward to, as the team moves into PI-11. The ModusBox team will be focused on sharing updates from our team on the progress we have made since the convening held in April. If you would like to learn more about the exciting announcements from April, check out this recap I wrote.
Here’s what the ModusBox team is excited about
In addition to new Mojaloop functionality, our team has been hard at work continuing to build our Mojaloop Partner Program along with other products and resources. We’ll be sharing these updates during the meeting along with some exciting news for the community next week. Stay tuned for that! Otherwise here are just a few of the other exciting conversations we’re looking forward to during this event.
Update on PISP from Google Pay
Earlier this year, Google Pay presented a proposal to extend Mojaloop to support Payment Initiation Service Providers (PISP). In April, they presented an update to the PISP stream that has the potential to accelerate payments to all classes of account holders participating in a Mojaloop real-time payment network. This month, Google will provide an update to this collaborative initiative (along with Coil and ModusBox) that includes design changes, change proposals, and the roadmap. We’re excited about this effort as it helps to equalize the playing field for those using the latest mobile money wallets or traditional banking services.
Bulk Payments
Over the course of the previous program increment, the Mojaloop core team has been working on standardizing Bulk Payments as specified in the Mojaloop API Definition v1.0. This now marks the completion of implementation for all basic use cases in version v1.0 of the Mojaloop FSP Interoperability API Specification. More to come on this during the convening.
Community member updates
What I enjoy the most about the quarterly convenings are the updates from other teams and members of the OSS community. This quarter, we’re excited to hear updates from Applied Payments, Coil, Crosslake, Deloitte, GSMA, HiPiPo, Glenbrook, Google, Microsoft, Mifos, Mojaloop Foundation, Mowali, Snapp, Sybrin, and others. Our team will showcase some open source contributions and products including a future roadmap.
Join us and say hi!
Don’t hesitate to reach out to any of the ModusBox team and say hi during the event. We love to make connections with the rest of the community. Let us know how you and your team are contributing to the Mojaloop ecosystem and how our team can help you.
If you aren’t able to make it to the convening, our site has a lot of new information and resources and we continue to add and update content frequently. You can get started with information on the impact that Real-Time Payments and Mojaloop can have on our world. And, if you would like to join us on our mission, learn more about our Mojaloop Partner Program and get in touch.
See you in the sessions!
